Mead Day
From ASH
Mead Day, organized by the American Homebrewers Association (AHA), is a national event to help increase camaraderie among homebrewers and meadmakers (see What is Mead?) and to introduce or reintroduce the meadmaking hobby.
Each year on the first Saturday in August, homebrewers around the nation are encouraged to invite non-brewing and brewing friends and family to celebrate by making mead.
2008
August 2nd in the Valley of the Sun is an unlikely date to hold the annual Mead Day festivities but those decisions aren't up to us. Those ASHers that braved the heat and traveled to Steve McKellips' house on that beautiful Saturday morning got to partake or witness in the brewing of some excellent Mead. Only two brewers (Steve and Barry T) made Mead that day, but they made approximately 18 gallons. In addition to the brewers there was perhaps 12 to 15 others in attendance. The brewing took place in the backyard where a nice pool came in quite handy for cooling off and playing games of pool volleyball. Steve put on a spread of Jamaican jerk chicken, baby back ribs, chips, dips and fruit. And needless to say there were numerous Meads to sample!
A special round of thanks to our host Steve McKellips and his wife Melissa for their hospitality. They went above and beyond in an effort to show how easy Mead can be made. If you were unable to attend plan to make it to the event next year! See you then!
